Monster Allergy is an Italian comic book series created by Alessandro Barbucci, Katja Centomo, Francesco Artibani and Barbara Canepa of Sky Doll. Barbucci and Canepa had previously co-created the W.I.T.C.H. comic series.[1]Monster Allergy lasted 29 issues; however, it is still in the course of reprints, in newspaper stands the 13th of every month.[2] In 2008, Barbara Canepa stated that she and her co-creators gained back the copyright to Monster Allergy after its first publishing run.[3]
On May 24, 2015, Tunué announced the new edition of the complete comic book, in two volumes of over 700 pages each, including a final unpublished episode.[4]
Plot[edit]
Monster Allergy details the adventures of Elena Potato, who moves with her family to Old Mill Village, and Ezekiel Zick, whose father is missing and is affected by all sorts of allergies including one that allows him to see monsters. Together, they uncover the secrets of the world of monsters. Zick and Elena face terrible danger and enemies, which they are usually able to overcome. They are aided by Timothy-Moth, Zick’s «cat», who is actually a kind of monster called a Tutor. Timothy oversees the monsters who live in Zick’s house which is an oasis for criminal monsters.[5][6]

Tamers[edit]
Monster Tamers pass the natural power of the Tone from parent to child, thus creating long dynasties of heroes. Tamers are able to spot monsters and tame them. If the monster refuse to be subdued, they are captured and imprisoned in special containers, a Taming Box (Dombox). This containers has been specially treated in order to preserve the prisoner while preventing its escape. Every type of monsters needs its own special Taming Box (Dombox) and canning method. The Tamer’s special skill lies in mastering these methods and in knowing all the many types of monster races. Most importantly, a Tamer must master the Tone, which is extremely powerful but is strictly connected and dependent on the skills of the Tamers who wields it. Tamers have a particularly sensitive sense of smell, which helps them perceive the presence of monsters or danger in general.[7]
Monster Tamer’s Handbook[edit]
- The Tone — A natural energy that can subjugate Monsters and Phantoms. This talent is not just limited to taming. If it is developed correctly, it can unleash unexpected powers in its bearer. The hand gesture strengthens the Tamer’s orders and allows him/her to move through walls, breath under water, or tame telepathically. The Tone is weakened by the scent of lavender, and if a Tamer’s voice cannot be heard, his/her powers will not work.[8]
- The Taming Move — it is of utmost important to the Monster Tamer. The hand movement strengthens the orders of the voice and helps direct the flow of power. But it can work both ways: an incorrect gesture can ruin even the most persuasive orders of the voice.[8]
- The Canning Process — In order to imprison Monster-Skas in Taming Boxes (Domboxes), all Tamers have to follow the same procedure. First of all, the monster must be subdued using the power of the voice. Only when this has been done can the Move be used. The Tamer, with their right hand, makes a special canning move that sucks the monster safety into the Taming Box (Dombox). The final closing of the jar is of vital importance, because if it is not carried out quickly and firmly, the entire operation can be undone.[9]
- Developing the Tone — In order to do this, they use the Tone, an internal power that, though careful study and diligent practice, can be developed for uses far beyond their wildest imagination. A Tamer learns to use the Tone in many different ways in the course of their training. You can tell how experienced an aspiring Tamers is from the way they use the tone and from the number of ways he can apply it.[10]
- Tamers’ Clans — The Tone is a hereditary power, passed on parent to child through the lineage of the Great Tamers’ Clans. Every Family has a special way of Taming, which remains unchanged through the centuries. It is a quality, such as courage, strength or cunning, that helps the Tamer do their job. These characteristics will define the nature of the entire clan.[11]
- Tamers’ History — Historically, Tamers were an essential part of monster society and enjoyed great respect, because they defended Bibbur-Si from the Monster-Skas and Dark Phantoms. But then some of the Tamers abused their powers, canning and taming even good monsters. The Council of Tutors was forced to send the entire every Tamer Clan into exile and their dynasties were scattered and sent to Detention Oases in the cities below. Nowadays, Monster Tamers are visible and a normal part of human society.[12]
The Universal Signs[edit]
In the monster world, the Astronomer Monsters create this Universal Sign to know the characteristic of a person or a monster to predict their future and knowing their personalities.[13]
How to know your sign: Add up the numbers of your birthday (for example if you’ve born on 26 November, you have to add 2+6+1+1=10 and then 1+0=1), Find the number of the respective signs. But if you got a 9, then you can choose between the first and last sign.[13]
- 1. Pum-Palom — The Carefree Sign. Kind-hearted and distracted they never know what they’re doing. They’re very friendly, but they’ve always got their head in the clouds.[13]
- 2. Dum-Papum — The Blundering Sign. They are characterized by their cleverness and creativity. Unfortunately, they are total bunglers and often muddle up their brilliant ideas.[13]
- 3. Dum-Tatyn — The Sensible Sign. They are responsible, proud and very brave. They are so polite that sometimes they’ll even take the blame for things they didn’t do.[13]
- 4. Pum-Terton — The High-spirited Sign. They love playing and they’re always enthusiastic and cheerful. If it were up to them, they’d only ever have a good time.[13]
- 5. Dum-Gerpen — The Fine Dining Sign. They love rich and tasty food. They really enjoy having company and would happily spend all day munching chips with their friends.[13]
- 6. Pum-Tertyn — The Explosive Sign. They are quick and speedy; sometimes they’re so hasty that they end up crashing into precious family heirloom vases or closed doors.[13]
- 7. Dum-Zazap — The Sensitive Sign. They are curious and in touch with their feelings. They are interested in everything, they read a lot and they’ll open every drawer they see — to such an extent that they’re sometimes considered nosy.[13]
- 8. Pum-Zap — The Extreme Sign. They see everything either bright red or dark green. When they are sure about something it’s almost impossible to get them to change their mind.[13]
Keepers[edit]
Monster Keepers are humans who can «see» monsters, and allow them to live in their homes, in Detention Oases. They help the Tutors defend the monsters from the dangers of the human world as well as the monster world. The gift of Sight is passed from parent to child, and few special people, so that entire generations of Keepers can look after the Oasis in total secret.[13]
Gift of Sight[edit]
A Keeper can give the «Gift of Sight» to the successor by putting their hands over their eyes. Mrs. Barrymore did this to Elena so she could be a better keeper. The donor does not lose their vision because they’re only passing a tiny part of their powers. It’s then up to the young Keepers to strengthen their vision through time.[13]

- The Keeper and the Monsters — While the Tutor of an Oasis watches over the detainees and tries to reform them, the Keeper brings them warmth and support. Therefore, they have to know the monsters’ personalities and their background, where they’re from and the reason for their tutelage. Every monster has its own needs, which the Keeper must know how to meet. As we know role of the Keeper is passed from parent to child, but they can be started fresh at any time.[14]
- A New World — When a young Keeper receives the «Gift of Sight», he/she experiences a moment of amazement and fright at the same time. Monsters, which he/she could only imagine in his/her mind until now, are certainly not what is expected. The new world that opens up before him/her can seem amazing and exciting, or frightening and bewildering.[15]
- Hello, meet your Keeper — Keepers mustn’t be shy with their monsters. They must be kind, but they must let them see that they are confident right from the start, or else they’ll take control of the house.[16]
- A Monstrous Test — When they first open an Oasis, they have to go through a trial period. The Keeper is given a few low-maintenance monsters that have committed minor offenses. If the Keeper shows to that he/she can perform the job, then a Tutor will come to the Oasis. He will be a strict Tutor for the other monsters that will arrive depending on the Oasis.[17]
- Theory and Practice — They need to complement the teachings of the Manual with practical experience. It’s important to study the rules and regulations, but they mustn’t forget that every monster is unique.[18]
Build your own Oasis[edit]
- The Detention Oasis — An Oasis worthy of its name should make all the guests feel comfortable, even though they each have different needs depending on which species they belong to. Therefore, a Keeper must know all the types of Monster-Si that may need accommodating in their colony.[14]
- Unexpected Surprises — Managing a group of monsters is a rather exhausting task, because it means having a house full of awkward guests who don’t always follow the human rules of good manners.[15]
- Quirks of an Oasis — There will be many changes in the Keeper’s house because of the monsters will try to recreate their own habitat within the Oasis.[16]
- Help is at Hand — Once a Tutor arrives, he or she will be able to help the Keeper maintain the Oasis to avoid chaos.[17]

In the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries, Monster Allergy was published as a comic magazine last September 2004. However, Summit Media (the publisher of Monster Allergy in the Philippines) stopped publishing Monster Allergy at Issue 14.[19] In Malaysia, it stopped publishing it at the 29th issue, the last issue. Chuang Yi Singapore finished publishing it until the 29th issue, the last of the comic book series. In the French version, in the 20th issue has speak 30 books. The comic book titles are quite different from the television series titles. Every issue contains a 44-page Monster Allergy story except the 30th that have 30 pages.[20]

Television series[edit]

Monster Allergy is an internationally co-produced animated television series co-created by Katja Centomo, Francesco Artibani, Alessandro Barbucci, and Barbara Canepa.[1] It was jointly produced by Futurikon, Rainbow, M6, Rai Fiction and ZDF.[2] Based on the Italian comic book series of the same name, it was initially broadcast on Rai 2 in Italy, and later aired on M6 in France, on KiKa in Germany, on YTV in Canada, and on Kids’ WB in the United States.
Beginning on 13 March 2018, the series has been officially made available for streaming on YouTube.[3][4]
Plot[edit]
Monster Allergy is based on the comic book series of the same name. The series follows young teenage boy Ezekiel Zick (nicknamed Zick) who suffers from various allergies and has the ability to see the invisible monsters that live among us. Along with help of his best friend, Elena Potato and his talking cat, Timothy, Zick hopes to hone his powers to one day become a Monster Tamer just like his dad, Zobedja Zick.[5][6]

Tamer[edit]
The Tamers are beings with special powers; their main characteristic is The Dom, an energy that is passed from parent to child. With the passing of the generations, powers and knowledge are passed on which lead to real dynasties of Monster Tamers.
The five Dom powers are:
- Sight Dom — the ability to see monsters and ghosts invisible to ordinary people.[7][8]
- Voice Dom — the ability of Tamers to force monsters and phantoms to do what they say.[8][9]
- Gesture Dom — the power to control monsters by gesture, and to capture them in a DomBox.[8][10]
- Enviro Dom — the ability to create an environment to be able to survive in an unfamiliar environment, and which also functions as a force field.[8][11]
- Energy Dom — the ability to release an energy ray that affects monsters, dark phantoms and even ordinary things, but not witches.[8][12]
Dom Items[edit]
The Dom Items are valuable items that are given by the Tutors to experienced Tamers.
- Universal DomBox — A gun-like container used by Tamers, it can capture any monster and multiple ones. Upon the monster’s capture, the DomBox specifies the name, species, danger level, and status of the monster.[13] However, this DomBox can only contain a monster for two hours, then it must be transferred to its specific DomBox or else the monster will escape.[14] While the Universal DomBox can capture Dark Phantoms it will dissolve them rather than trapping them, since they are untrappable.[15] It also have the ability to analyze any liquid substance that it’s invisible to the naked eye.[16][17][18]
- Zick’s Sunglasses — This item is a gift from Elena to Zick. At first, it was used to help cover Zick’s eyes when they turn red, but it helps him intensify his power for the Energy Dom.[13]
- Dom Glove — This item will improve the power levels of a Tamer by capturing every four monsters by giving the Gems of Power. The Red Gem is the basic first level, while Yellow Gem is at second level. At the third level, earning the Green Gem has the ability disintegrate Dark Phantoms, and while the fourth level is the Blue Gem. It is unknown to how to earn the White Gem, the fifth and final level although since Zick can earn a new gem by collecting 4 monsters in theory to earn the White gem Zick has to capture 20 monsters.
- Regular DomBox — special boxes used to hold a captured monster. There are different types of DomBoxes for each monster.[12]
- Tele-skates — These items will be earned along with the Green Gem.[16] They have the ability to allow the carrier to teleport anywhere to its destination of their choosing.[19] It can also be upgraded to teleport along with someone else.[20]
- Dom Staff — This Dom weapon amplifies the Tamer’s Energy Dom by firing a strong ray beam through the staff .[21]
- Hypno-Disk — This device is used to erase and alter peoples memories if they see too much, and threaten to reveal the secrets of the world of monsters.[22]
- Crystallizator — This device is mainly used for freezing monsters when no Dombox is available. It has a dial to adjust the ray’s temperature.[23]
- Radio-Worm — An anti-escape wristband. This tracking device makes a loud screech when the monster tries to remove it.[24]
- Disco-Monster — A gun-like device that forces a monster to dance. This makes a monster exhausted so it can be captured easily.[25]
- Densifier — This item can alter the body of a person by adjusting it to allow the body pass through any attack, walls and objective. It can also make the user body too heavy or can be use to weaken a monsters power.[20][26] It’s also has to ability to make the user look like a Dark Phantom.[27]
- Scepter Dom (ZetaDom Stick) — A wand with the ability to control monsters at will. It’s considered to be the strongest Dom weapon. However, if the scepter is used too much, it becomes uncontrollable and the user becomes a small monster as a side effect.[28]
Broadcast[edit]
In Italy, Monster Allergy premiered on 6 February 2006 on Rai 2.[29]
In France, the series premiered on M6[30] (a co-producer of the series) on 18 October 2006 as part of its M6 Kid strand.
In Germany, the series premiered on 23 October 2006 on KiKa, a joint operation of ZDF and ARD.
In the United States, the series premiered on 23 September 2006 on Kids’ WB television block broadcast on the affiliates of then-newly formed The CW network.[31] It was shown with scenes edited or cut for time constraints and due to censorship,[32][33] and the airing order did not follow production order. The series was later made available in its unaltered English dub to watch on Netflix.
In Canada, it was broadcast on YTV during Crunch and The Zone.
In the United Kingdom was aired on BBC One in 2006 and in 2008 on Cartoon Network UK and Cartoon Network Too.

For Common Sense Media, Emily Ashby gave Monster Allergy a mixed review. She wrote that «cartoon violence (explosions, laser blasts from eyes) is commonplace throughout the show» and that it «exists mostly as TV fluff.»[34]

Monster Allergy è una serie a fumetti pubblicata mensilmente da ottobre 2003 a febbraio 2006 da Walt Disney Italia sotto l’etichetta Buena Vista Comics. Nel 2016 la serie ha avuto un seguito, Monster Allergy Evolution.
Nel 2005 è stata prodotta una serie animata basata sulla prima serie a fumetti.

La serie ha esordito il 13 ottobre 2003, la prima pubblicata dalla Buena Vista. Venne ideato da Katja Centomo e Francesco Artibani, con Alessandro Barbucci e Barbara Canepa. La serie è terminata dopo 29 numeri del fumetto e 26 episodi animati. Nel 2006 sono stati ristampati i primi sette numeri.[1] I primi sei numeri della serie a fumetti sono stati ristampati dalla casa editrice GP Publishing tra ottobre 2011 e marzo 2012. Nel novembre 2015, Tunué ha pubblicato l’ultimo volume, il n. 30, insieme alla ripubblicazione di tutte le storie in due volumi Deluxe. Nel 2017 l’autrice dei fumetti Katja Centorno afferma che il nome della serie è preso dalle allergie dei vari mostri come Milk, Mongol, Ciro, Tomarrior, Strafundel, Krasparrioszrzs, e non come la maggior parte degli utenti pensa ossia dall’allergia che Zick ha nei confronti dei mostri.
Il 24 maggio 2015 Tunué ha annunciato la riedizione integrale del fumetto, in due volumi da oltre 700 pagine, comprensivo di un ultimo episodio inedito,[2] ambientato sei anni dopo l’episodio 29.

Nell’autunno del 2016 sono usciti i primi volumi di una nuova serie di fumetti: Monster Allergy Evolution.

Durata sei numeri, questa serie di storie, scritta da Erika Centomo e Moreno Savoretti, narra le avventure di Bim-Bombak, che gestisce l’albergo, e centro rigenerante La Tana del Sollazzo, posta al centro di Bibbur-Si e Bobbahu, il suo assistente. Le sue avventure, una serie di gag che oscillano tra il tragico e il comico, sono la parte più classicamente Disney di tutto l’albo e che sono la prima collaborazione Disney di Bruno Olivieri, cartoonist sardo del panorama indipendente italiano. I primi due episodi della serie sono stati realizzati da Silvio Camboni.

Elena Patata si è appena trasferita assieme ai genitori a Oldmill Village, nella periferia dell’immaginaria Bigburg. Nonostante il consiglio dei suoi coetanei, Elena si interessa al suo vicino di casa: Ezechiele Zick, detto Zick.
Zick è all’apparenza un normale ragazzo di 10 anni, solitario e che soffre di svariate allergie, ma in realtà riesce anche a vedere i mostri e i fantasmi. Zick difatti è un Domatore, un mostro dalla curiosa forma umana in grado di usare particolari poteri per poter assoggettare i mostri e gli spettri. Nella sua casa, con la quale convive con la madre Greta Barrymore, una Rifuggiatrice (un umano che vede i mostri), vi abitano diversi mostri, esiliati dalla loro città natale per alcuni crimini (quali rubare, creare disordine, diffondere menzogne e disturbare la quiete) e a controllarli ci sta un Tutore, una specie di mostri che fungono da giurisdizione nel mondo dei mostri. Tale tutore, Timothy-Moth, ha le sembianze di un gatto per non dover ricorrere all’invisibilità.
Elena, seppur senza poter vedere i mostri, crede a ciò che sostiene Zick. Le loro avventure cominciano con la ricerca dei loro gatti, catturati dai Gorka, una mostruosa specie di mostri mutaforma che vogliono vendicarsi del loro esilio contro i Tutori, cercandoli nella loro forma gattesca. A capo dei Gorka vi è Magnacat, il quale tenta di portare dalla sua parte Zick, ma questi evoca uno Spettro Nero, un fantasma che si allontana dalla redenzione divorando mostri, che divora Magnacat. Questi però, sopravvive e a seguito della scomparsa dello Spettro, Magnacat diventa mezzo mostro e mezzo spettro, rinominandosi «Maschera di Fuoco».
Preoccupati, Timothy e Zick tentano di riunire i Domatori, esiliati anch’essi per il loro abuso di potere, per sopraffare Magnacat. Nella ricerca, Zick scopre che suo padre Zob, creduto morto, era in realtà vivo e rimpicciolito a seguito di un troppo uso di Energia. Per riportare il padre normale, Zick chiede aiuto alle anguane, streghe commercianti longeve di cui anche la zia di Zick, Ermelia Barrymore, ne fa parte. Salvato Zob e sconfitto per sempre Magnacat, questi fa in tempo a evocare i Gaigamonster, giganteschi e distruttivi mostri antichi. Approfittando di ciò, Moog Magister, il Re delle Anguane, tenta di usare il potere del più forte dei Gaiga, ma viene divorato da esso è rinchiuso in un barattolo dai Domatori. Per l’emergenza, Greta dona a Elena i poteri da Rifuggiatore, permettendole di vedere i mostri.
Su scelta dei Tutori, i Domatori vengono reinseriti nella società dei mostri, e permettono ai mostri rinnegati di casa Zick di essere liberi. Approfittando di ciò, Hector Sinistro, un Domatore Nero (ossia un Domatore malvagio), cattura i suddetti mostri e, per vendicarsi, cerca di distruggere Zick, nipote di colui che lo aveva imprigionato, Ezeria Zick. Zick ha la meglio, ma Sinistro scopre che Zick ha un potere da Domatore, molto più potente degli altri e cerca di inscatolare tale potere, usando Elena come ostaggio. Zick cede tutto il suo potere, ma l’esplosione energetica è così potente che Sinistro scompare nel nulla. Zick intanto, perde tutti i suoi poteri, compreso quello di vedere i mostri.
Sei anni dopo, Elena scopre pure che la perdita dei poteri ha interrotto il processo di crescita di Zick. Dispiaciuta, i due si dirigono al cimitero dei Domatori, dove trovano l’energia di diversi Domatori deceduti. Con una di quelle, Zick riacquista sia la Vista, che i poteri che l’età adolescenziale. Tuttavia, sulle loro strade, incombono altri pericoli e avventure.

Barbucci, già da alcuni anni, iniziando la sua collaborazione con questi progetti sperimentali di Disney Italia, aveva iniziato ad evolvere il suo stile avvicinandosi, come molti cartoonist statunitensi, alla lezione dei mangaka. Lo sviluppo del suo stile, destinato a fare scuola,[3] si può ripercorrere sia sulle pagine di PKNA (specie il quattordicesimo volume, Carpe Diem) che sulle pagine di W.I.T.C.H., uno dei più originali fumetti Disney italiani. Dopo un ottimo lavoro ai disegni per primo numero, passa poi alla supervisione dei disegni, realizzati da altri collaboratori alla serie: il secondo numero viene affidato a Giovanni Rigano, che, assieme ad Alessio Coppola, darà l’interpretazione più originale allo stile della serie. Rigano, poi, interpreterà il suo episodio con molto carattere, mentre Coppola farà valere l’esperienza accumulata sulle pagine di X-Mickey.
Per quel che riguarda le storie, scritte per la maggior parte da Artibani su soggetto della Centomo, risultano avvincenti e al tempo stesso divertenti, con dialoghi brillanti e di facile lettura. Notevole, tra le storie di questo bravo sceneggiatore, Il ritorno di Zob (apparsa sul nono numero, pubblicato nel giugno 2004). In questa storia, troviamo Zick ed Elena alle prese con un doppio mistero: mentre un terribile mostro si aggira per le strade della città e un crescente nervosismo serpeggia tra gli abitanti, i due amici devono anche organizzare un divertente spettacolo, che omaggia i fumetti di supereroi. Nel corso della storia, troviamo anche un’originale rielaborazione del mito del lupo mannaro, mentre Federico Nardo reinterpreterà i costumi di personaggi come Robin, Flash, l’Uomo Ragno 2099, il Thor Marvel e il Punitore.
Altri sceneggiatori che collaborano alla serie provengono nientemeno che dalla Bonelli: Luca Enoch e Lorenzo Bartoli con un numero ciascuno, mentre il maggior aiuto ad Artibani (anche supervisore dei testi) è venuto dal disneyano Bruno Enna, realizzatore, tra l’altro, di uno dei numeri più belli e commoventi della serie (l’undicesimo, L’anguana di Er, uscito nell’agosto 2004 e disegnato da Paolo Campinoti). Successivamente, nuovi sceneggiatori si uniscono al gruppo: da Michele Medda (co-creatore delle serie «Nathan Never» e «Legs Weaver»), a esordienti come Giovanni di Gregorio e Fabrizio Lo Bianco.

Nel 2005 ne è stato tratto da Rainbow una serie animata di 26 episodi ed un episodio bonus.
Nel 2008 è stata realizzata una seconda stagione di 26 episodi.

Monster Allergy: Back to Back è un lungometraggio di Monster Allergy uscito nel 2008, subito dopo la fine della messa in onda della seconda stagione della serie. Non è destinato alla proiezione cinematografica ma è andato in onda su DisneyChannel Italia. La sua durata è di all’incirca 70 min. La trama tratta di un’avventura tutta vissuta da Zick e Teddy con qualche apparizione degli altri personaggi. La storia riprende molti flashback delle stagioni precedenti e prende molti spunti dalla serie a fumetti.

Il videogioco di Monster Allergy è uscito nel 2007 assieme all’episodio Bonus della prima stagione. Pubblicato dalle merendine Kinder e Ferrero, il videogioco non si può trovare più in vendita. Questo videogioco si chiama appunto Monster Allergy: Il domatore di mostri.

Nel 2016 è stata realizzato un musical, basato sul fumetto, che dopo l’anteprima romana del 22 settembre al teatro Sistina, è andato in scena, sempre al Sistina, dal 9 al 19 febbraio del 2017.[4]
